Over the Christmas holiday we were given some monologues from 'The Wonderful World of Dissocia'. There were two male speeches, they were both from the character of Victor. For the monologues we found out that Victor works with watch repair, In the monologue Victor is telling Lisa about her lost our and how it happened.
In preparation to the audition I thought about my characterisation of Victor, with this I thought of different ways that he would use his vocals. I tried doing the monologue in a RP accents, adding emphasis on the vowels and over exaggeration on every sound within the words. After this I tried some of the lines using less pronunciation and dropping some of the sounds. I did not think that this fit with the character of Victor as I read him as a high status man, and would speak well, as if he was rabbling to Lisa, that he knows a lot of the subject. I also thought about what characters I would like to play, with a basic knowledge of the play and the storyline, the character of the Goat interested me, I would have liked to play a character that explores a more serious subject, like the Goat does. I would like to have done this as it is very different to other characters I have played, and I could then learn some knew techniques.
During the audition I did my monologue once, I feel that I used good characterisation, using exaggerated gestures and tone to my voice. This then turned into a very posh accent, and then made my character sound as if he was droning on at Lisa. Once I had done the monologue, I was asked to de-do it yet taking on a very strict, formal character. I used short punchy words and left pauses between each sentences. This made my character sound like he was delivering a set of instructions, and that what ever he said was right, as if a head teacher would to a child (someone of less authority). After this to show diversity I was asked to deliver the monologue in an over exaggerated way, using funny characteristics. I made my vocals flowing and added emphasis on the odd word, this made my character seem wacky and out of it. To show a difference between the two types of character, I made my body language bigger and used fast pace gestures. After I had done my monologue I was asked questions about my acting preferences and character and my understanding of the play. One of the questions was, How do you feel that I can use my acting techniques to create a character? I said that I feel that I use my characterisation well. I think about voice, non verbal communication and I think about what my character has been through to get to where they are in the point of the play.
