Cats Dance Evaluation

As part of the Year 13's musical of 'Cats' as a class we were given one song to dance to as part of our dance ensemble. This song was the Pekes and the Pollicles. My role as part of the dance is as a reporter. I think that this dance went really well in the show in term of characterisation and performance skills. I think that I kept the character well, and really told the story of how my character really wants to get the best story off of the models.

This was my main strength in the dance, keeping up the character and portraying a story across to the audience. I used my performance skills, such as facial expression, I really showed desperation in my face and showed my characters wanting. The other performance skill that I think I used successfully was my focus in the dance, I changed up some of the moves to direct them to the models of the character singing the song. I think this changed up some of the dynamics in the dance.

One thing that I would like to work on after doing the 'Cats' dance, is my alignment when I'm performing. From watching back the videos, it was clear that I was confident with the routine and the moves, but I was not performing all of the moves with clear lines with what I do and with extension in all of the right places. For example in the dance sequence when we reach up with our note pads I didn't go all the way with the move.

To improve my extension and alignment when dancing, I will perform my sections of the dance in front of the mirror in the studio, and I will video this. In reflection on these videos I will be able to pin point section that I need to take further. I see this as a long term target that I will look into in all of my performances.

To improve my posture, I will look into the different stances of different character, and how the posture of different people can show different moods and feeling to a dance. For example the reporter would be very upright with a tight and precise posture to show my characters formal traits as a journalist.
